Wood charcoal helps sage plants shrug off toxic soil metal

If you garden near old industrial sites, roadways, or other cadmium-tainted soil, mixing in wood biochar could be a simple way to grow healthier herbs like sage without the toxic buildup.

Cadmium is a toxic metal that can end up in garden soil and stunts plant growth while poisoning the food chain. Researchers found that mixing charcoal made from acacia wood into the soil helped sage plants grow bigger, produce more essential oil, and take up more nutrients even when cadmium levels were high. The charcoal seems to work by keeping the cadmium from moving out of the roots and into the parts of the plant we actually use.
