Amino acid spray helps periwinkle survive severe drought stress

Madagascar periwinkle is a medicinal plant whose compounds are used to make cancer drugs, but drought stress can stunt its growth and reduce its useful chemicals. Researchers sprayed the plants' leaves with different amounts of an amino acid called tryptophan, which the plant naturally uses to build growth hormones, and found that higher doses helped the plants hold onto water, keep their cells intact, and ramp up their own antioxidant defenses even when water was scarce. The best results came from spraying at 200 to 250 mg per liter, offering a simple way to help this valuable plant handle dry conditions.
