Amino acid spray helps periwinkle survive severe drought stress

Medicinal Plants

The periwinkle in your flower bed isn't just a pretty groundcover, it's the source plant for vincristine and vinblastine, two chemotherapy drugs, and this study shows a simple leaf spray could keep it thriving through dry spells.

Madagascar periwinkle is a medicinal plant whose compounds are used to make cancer drugs, but drought stress can stunt its growth and reduce its useful chemicals. Researchers sprayed the plants' leaves with different amounts of an amino acid called tryptophan, which the plant naturally uses to build growth hormones, and found that higher doses helped the plants hold onto water, keep their cells intact, and ramp up their own antioxidant defenses even when water was scarce. The best results came from spraying at 200 to 250 mg per liter, offering a simple way to help this valuable plant handle dry conditions.

Key Findings

1

Tryptophan applied at 200-250 mg L⁻¹ significantly improved plant dry weight, leaf water content, membrane stability, and catalase/peroxidase enzyme activity under severe drought (p ≤ 0.01)

2

Antioxidant capacity and total protein content also increased significantly with tryptophan treatment (p ≤ 0.05)

3

Severe drought stress alone significantly reduced dry weight, protein content, membrane stability, and leaf relative water content compared to well-watered controls

chevron_right Technical Summary

Spraying the amino acid tryptophan on Madagascar periwinkle plants helped them cope with drought, boosting growth and stress-fighting antioxidant activity even under severe water shortage. This suggests a cheap foliar treatment could help protect this important cancer-drug source plant during dry conditions.
