A natural spray helps rosemary cope with salty water

If you grow rosemary in containers near a coastal garden or use reclaimed water with a bit of salt in it, this compound could be the difference between a leggy, stressed plant and a fuller, greener one.

Rosemary doesn't love salty soil or water, it tends to grow smaller and get stressed out. Researchers sprayed rosemary leaves with GABA, a compound plants already make to signal stress, and found that the right dose helped plants grow taller, bushier, and with bigger leaves even under salty conditions. It's not a magic fix though: some stress markers, like leaky, damaged cell membranes, actually got worse with higher GABA doses combined with the highest salt levels.

Non-saline plants treated with 60 mM GABA produced the largest stem length (25.9 cm) and leaf area (4.57 cm²), compared to just 2.18 cm² leaf area with no GABA under 150 mM salt.

Salinity control plants (0 mM salt) sprayed with 20 mM GABA had the highest shoot dry weight (7.75 g), while 150 mM salt alone dropped dry weight to its lowest (4.94 g).

Proline (a stress marker) peaked at 100 mM salinity (0.0352 μmol/g) and rose with GABA dose too, while electrolyte leakage was worst (98%) at 150 mM salt combined with 60 mM GABA.
