Soft plant litter feeds ancient peat carbon faster than tough litter

The soggy, spongy ground in a bog or wetland you might hike past is quietly recycling carbon from every leaf and stem that falls into it, and how crunchy or soft that litter is changes how fast that carbon gets absorbed into the ancient soil below.
Peat bogs hold carbon that's been locked away for a very long time, but new leaves and plant bits that fall on top don't just sit there. Scientists found that soft, easily-broken-down litter rots away three times faster than tough, fibrous litter, and this speed controls how quickly fresh carbon gets pulled into the old peat's carbon cycle. Mixing tough and soft litter together just gave a result right in the middle, with no surprises.

Labile (easily decomposed) litter lost 35% of its mass over 90 days, compared to only 10% for recalcitrant (tough) litter
A 50/50 mixed litter treatment showed intermediate decomposition (22%), matching the additive prediction from the two pure treatments with no synergistic effect
Peat itself is a 'carbon-14 depleted' old carbon endmember, while dissolved organic carbon, microbial biomass, and dissolved inorganic carbon act as intermediate pools enriched by fresh litter inputs
