The compost you buy or make at home could get better and faster if this waste-carbon trick catches on, since it packed the pile with more of the bacteria known to help roots take up nutrients.
Scientists took spent activated carbon, the kind used up in water filters and normally sent to landfills, and mixed it into compost made from chicken manure and mushroom growing waste. Adding this leftover carbon made the compost heat up and finish curing faster, and it encouraged more of the beneficial bacteria that help plants grow. The compost also passed a seed-germination test with flying colors, meaning it's safe to use without harming young plants.
Key Findings
SAC addition shortened the hot composting phase from 12 days to 9 days at 20-30% dosing, and compost stabilized within 30-42 days.
Higher SAC levels raised organic carbon (37.94% to 54.12%) and compost yield (41.94% to 54.70%), though nitrogen dropped from 2.28% to 1.34% due to dilution.
At 20% SAC, plant-growth-promoting bacteria (Rhizobiaceae, Mesorhizobium, Ensifer) reached 22.47% combined relative abundance, the highest among treatments; all SAC batches scored germination indices of 111-130%, indicating no phytotoxicity.
