Charcoal-like soil additive helps bacteria destroy toxic explosive residue faster

The biochar many gardeners already mix into raised beds to boost soil health turns out to have a second superpower: helping bacteria neutralize toxic pollutants, which is good news for anyone gardening near old industrial or military sites.
Researchers took a nasty explosive chemical called TNT, which can linger in soil and water for decades, and tested whether adding biochar (basically charcoal made from wood waste) would help bacteria break it down faster. It worked remarkably well: the biochar seemed to soak up some of the toxic chemical so the bacteria weren't as overwhelmed, while also feeding them nutrients that revved up their internal cleanup machinery. The bacteria went from clearing less than half the contamination to nearly 90% within two days.
