Simple on-farm kiln makes biochar cheaper than buying it

If you compost or amend garden beds with biochar, this points to a low-cost way farmers could soon produce it from crop leftovers instead of trucking it in from a centralized plant.
Biochar is charred plant material that can be mixed into soil to help it hold water and nutrients while locking away carbon. Researchers tested three basic, low-cost kiln designs a farmer could build and run right on their own land, using corn cobs, corn stalks, and sorghum stover as feedstock. One design, which lets the material char passively without constant tending, cut the labor needed so much that it beat the price of biochar you'd buy at retail.
Key Findings
The Indirect-Heat Fine-Feedstock Retort (Type C) achieved the lowest minimum selling price at $1.74/kg, versus $2.60/kg for the Controlled-Draft Flame-Curtain Kiln and $3.06/kg for the Traditional Oregon Kiln.
Labor accounted for more than 95% of production costs while capital equipment was under 3%, with Type C boosting biochar output per labor hour by 80% due to its passive charring phase.
A 10,000-draw Monte Carlo simulation confirmed the Type C < Type B < Type A cost ranking held in 99.9% of scenarios, and Type C undercut even the low end of the $3-5/kg retail price range for specialty biochar.
