If a brief, controlled stress to a parent plant can make its offspring grow bigger and handle salt or drought better, gardeners saving seed from tough survivors may already be doing a rough version of this without knowing it.
Researchers gave mother plants a mild dose of nitrogen-doped carbon dots, tiny particles that act like a light stress trigger. The stressed mothers passed down some kind of memory to their seeds, and the resulting offspring plants grew much bigger, greener, and more salt-tolerant than normal. Because the method skips genetic modification and heavy metals, it could offer a cheap, green way to make future crop seeds naturally hardier.
Key Findings
F2 offspring from CND-stressed mother plants showed 67.0%-200% higher aboveground biomass within 5-30 days, plus 22.0% higher silique fresh weight and 38.7% higher dry weight
Chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate increased by 98.5% and 100% respectively, along with markedly improved salt tolerance
