Desert bacterium helps potatoes thrive in salty farm soil

Zeng Y, Tao Q, Fan J, Wang Y, Tao R

Soil Health

If you've ever struggled with a white crust forming on garden soil near a driveway or coastline, this shows how a single soil microbe can recruit an underground community to make salt-stressed plants healthier.

Researchers found a bacterium living in desert soil that, when added to potato roots, helps the plants cope with salty conditions that would normally stunt growth. The bacterium doesn't do this alone: it recruits other helpful microbes already living in the soil, and together they lower the harmful salt levels inside the plant while boosting a healthier balance of minerals. In real farm fields with salty soil, potatoes treated this way grew better and produced heavier tubers.

Key Findings

1

Ensifer sp. SA403 reduced sodium buildup in potato shoots and increased the potassium-to-sodium ratio, with effects much stronger in non-sterile soil than sterile soil, showing it works by cooperating with resident microbes rather than acting alone

2

The bacterium reshaped the rhizosphere microbial community, enriching beneficial taxa like Priestia and Bradyrhizobium and boosting glutathione and sulfur metabolism pathways

3

Field trials on saline soils showed SA403 significantly increased seedling emergence and tuber weight, alongside plant gene changes in jasmonic acid signaling and amino-acid biosynthesis

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists found a desert soil bacterium that helps potatoes survive salty soil by teaming up with other beneficial microbes in the root zone, cutting salt buildup in the plant and boosting harvests in real field tests.

Desert-derived Ensifer sp. SA403 enhances potato salt tolerance by reshaping rhizosphere microbiome functions and host responses.

Soil salinization increasingly threatens global food security, and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), a moderately salt-sensitive crop, is particularly vulnerable to saline soils. Plant growth-promotin...
