Pine-like tree cones turn into powerful water-cleaning charcoal

The fallen cones littering the ground under casuarina windbreak trees aren't just yard waste to rake up, they can be baked into a charcoal-like filter material that soaks up toxic dye from water almost as well as commercial products.
Researchers took the woody seed cones from Casuarina trees (sometimes called Australian pine or ironwood) and heated them into a charcoal-like material full of tiny pores, similar to how activated charcoal is made. This material turned out to be extremely good at grabbing onto malachite green, a toxic dye used in textiles and aquariums that pollutes waterways. With the right dose and timing, the treated cones removed almost 97% of the dye from contaminated water.
Key Findings
The carbonized cone material has a massive surface area of 736.59 m²/g, packed with pores and functional groups like hydroxyl and carboxyl that grab dye molecules.
Optimal conditions (47 minutes contact time, 0.367 g dose, 60.5 mg/L starting dye concentration) achieved 96.86% removal of malachite green dye.
The adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and diffusion-controlled, with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics best describing how the dye binds to the material.
