The rice hulls typically burned or dumped after harvest could soon replace the foam packaging that clogs landfills for centuries, and this version breaks down in your compost pile in about a month.

Researchers mixed leftover rice husks, the tough outer shell removed from rice grains, with a plant-based cellulose gel to create a foam that works like Styrofoam but isn't made from petroleum. The foam held up well, resisted water almost as well as plastic foam, and nearly disappeared when buried in soil for 30 days. Seeds planted in that soil still sprouted at a healthy rate, showing the breakdown products don't harm plants.

Contact angle measurements (84.6° dropping to 66.8° after 180 seconds) showed water resistance comparable to or better than starch-based biodegradable foams and disposable polystyrene

Foams nearly fully biodegraded in soil within 30 days, and a 87.5% seed germination rate confirmed no toxic effects on plant growth
