Trifluralin is a widely used pre-emergent herbicide sprayed on the very lawns, garden beds, and farm fields that feed the runoff into local water and dairy sources, so a cheap detection tool means residue gets caught faster.
Researchers designed a special sponge-like material full of tiny chemical hooks that grab onto trifluralin, a weedkiller farmers spray on fields to stop weeds before they sprout. When the material catches this weedkiller, it stops glowing under light, giving a clear visual signal that the chemical is present. They tested it in water and milk and found it could detect even tiny trace amounts, which could help keep pesticide residue out of our food and drinking water.
