Two algae species teamed up to erase dye pollution

The green scum you might skim off a backyard pond or rain barrel is actually a tiny chemical factory that can strip industrial dye pollution out of water using nothing but sunlight and teamwork between species.

Researchers put two types of microscopic algae together in water contaminated with methylene blue, a dye used in textiles and labs that's notoriously hard to break down. The algae duo completely cleared the dye within days, and while one species stayed mostly unbothered, the other visibly changed shape and chemistry to cope with the stress, essentially building up its own antioxidant defenses. The cleaned water was also less toxic to cells afterward, showing the algae didn't just hide the pollution but actually broke it apart.
