Reusable film soaks up blue dye and self-cleans under UV light

Scientists made a special plastic film that grabs a common blue dye out of dirty water almost completely. When they shine UV light on the used film, it breaks the dye down and the film becomes ready to use again, multiple times over.
Key Findings
The sulfonated polymer film achieved complete methylene blue removal from water under the tested conditions, following pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics.
A TiO2/multiwalled carbon nanotube filler combination preserved fast dye uptake, while carbon nanotubes alone slowed adsorption due to reduced film hydrophilicity.
UV-assisted regeneration mineralized dye-derived nitrogen to near-theoretical nitrate levels within about 4 hours at low dye loading, but efficiency dropped sharply at higher dye loads.
