There's a pollution tipping point aquatic plants can't handle

If you've ever put water lettuce or vetiver grass in a pond or rain garden to filter runoff, this tells you there's a real limit to how much pharmaceutical and cosmetic pollution those plants can shrug off before they stop cleaning and start struggling.

Scientists looked at 38 studies where water plants were exposed to a mix of drugs, lotions, and excess nutrients, the kind of pollution common in lakes and streams near cities. Below a certain pollution level, plants seemed to actually kick their defenses into gear and clean the water well. But once pollution crossed roughly 10 mg/L, the plants got overwhelmed, their internal damage piled up, and floating plants like water lettuce plus a grass called vetiver held up far better than submerged species like pondweed.
