The unassuming grasses and mints growing along a roadside or old industrial lot might be quietly filtering heavy metals out of contaminated ground, and knowing which ones do this could shape how neighborhoods and reclamation projects choose what to plant.
Scientists looked at hundreds of wild plants growing in Iran's mining areas to see which ones were good at soaking up toxic metals like lead, arsenic, and zinc from polluted soil. Some plants, like orchard grass and lamb's ear, turned out to be especially good at pulling these metals up into their leaves and stems, while others were better at trapping metals safely in their roots so they don't spread further. This kind of natural filtering could help clean up contaminated mining land without expensive chemical treatments.
Key Findings
Analysis covered 1,055 plant samples spanning 268 genera and 63 plant families from Iranian mining regions.
Dactylis glomerata (orchard grass) hyperaccumulated arsenic and iron, while Stachys byzantina (lamb's ear) hyperaccumulated lead.
Plant families showed distinct strategies: Scrophulariaceae, Malvaceae, and Apiaceae excelled at pulling metals into shoots (phytoextraction), while Amaranthaceae, Tamaricaceae, Asparagaceae, and Hyacinthaceae were better at trapping metals in roots (phytostabilization).
