The mushrooms and soil microbes under your feet do more than feed plants; certain fungal partners are being studied worldwide for pulling lead, cadmium, and other toxic metals out of contaminated ground, which matters for anyone gardening near old industrial sites, roadways, or urban lots.
Scientists looked at over 600 studies from the last two decades to map out what researchers already know about a special type of fungus that partners with plant roots. These fungi, called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, help plants survive and even soak up dangerous heavy metals from polluted soil. The review found that interest in this topic has exploded since 2019, with scientists now focused on understanding exactly how these fungi protect plants from metal poisoning at a molecular level.
