Soil isn't just dirt, it's packed with tiny single-celled hunters called protists that eat bacteria, fungi, and each other. By choosing what they eat, these predators shape which microbes end up living near plant roots, and it turns out this shapes plant health, nutrient availability, and even disease resistance. When farming practices or drought wipe out protist diversity, soils lose some of their natural ability to suppress plant diseases and release nutrients like phosphorus.
