The tomato plant wilting despite regular watering during a heat wave isn't reacting to heat or dryness alone, it's running a totally different internal program than either stress would cause by itself.

Scientists used to study plant stress one problem at a time, like just drought or just heat. This review explains that when several stresses hit a plant together, which is what actually happens outside a lab, the plant doesn't just experience a bigger pile of the same reactions. It rewires its chemistry and physiology in entirely new ways, which matters a lot for breeding crops that can survive real-world, messy weather.
