Benin's lowest-input okra farmers grow the biggest harvests

If you grow okra in your own garden, this study is a reminder that piling on fertilizer isn't always the secret to a bigger harvest, sometimes timing and soil moisture matter more.
Researchers talked to 420 okra farmers across Benin and sorted them into three groups based on how they farm: heavy fertilizer users, low-input farmers who mix crops together, and a group that farms on flood-recession land with almost no fertilizer at all. Surprisingly, that last low-input group grew the most okra per acre, even though nearly every farmer in the study, no matter their approach, said pests and diseases were their biggest headache.
