New software automates tracking of plant cell growth signals

The pollen tube that fertilizes a flower in your garden grows by pulsing forward in rhythmic bursts, and this tool finally lets scientists measure that rhythm precisely enough to figure out what controls it.

Some plant cells, like pollen tubes and root hairs, grow only from their very tip, stretching forward like a finger instead of expanding all over. That growth happens in bursts and pulses driven by molecules moving around just inside the tip, but tracking those tiny, fast-changing patterns by eye has always been slow and unreliable. The researchers built software called TipQuant that automatically finds the cell tip and measures these molecular patterns over time, so scientists can finally study the process quickly and consistently.
