Salty soil makes bees pickier about which tomato plants to visit

If you grow tomatoes in soil with any salt buildup, from coastal gardens to over-fertilized beds, the rootstock you choose can be the difference between a plant bees ignore and one they keep visiting.

Scientists grafted a popular tomato variety onto 26 different rootstocks and grew them in salty conditions to see what would happen. They found that the rootstocks best at keeping salt out of the leaves also kept the plants healthier and more nutritious, and bumblebees noticeably preferred visiting those healthier plants. It turns out the bees were essentially voting with their flight paths for the plants doing the best job of coping with stress.
