A simpler way to hunt down the genes behind great apples

The apple varieties you plant in your yard or find at a farmers market take decades to breed, and this method could shave years off finding the genes for disease resistance, flavor, or cold tolerance in future trees.

Breeding better apples usually means growing huge, carefully controlled family trees of plants for years just to figure out which genes control things like disease resistance or sweetness, which is slow and expensive for a tree that takes years to even flower. Researchers tested whether they could skip some of that setup by studying seeds collected from trees pollinated naturally by whatever pollen happened to be around, then using statistical models to trace traits back to specific genes. Their simulations show this shortcut works, as long as breeders sample a few hundred seedlings, which could let them find useful genes hiding in wild apple relatives much faster.
