This wetland fern is popping up everywhere right now

iNaturalist Community

Native Plants

If you've got a damp, shady corner of the yard that nothing else will grow in, sensitive fern is the plant other naturalists are spotting everywhere this week, and it thrives exactly where lawns fail.

Sensitive fern is a common woodland and wetland fern with distinctive broad, wavy leaflets, and this week nearly 450 people logged confirmed sightings of it on iNaturalist. That surge usually means the fern is at a visible peak, easy to spot along stream banks, in ditches, and in shady garden beds right now. It gets its name because the fronds die back at the first hint of frost, so late summer is prime viewing season before that happens.
