Congo swamp forests host fewer moths, with a backwards rainy season

The palms and hardwoods in your own garden shed leaves and grow on a seasonal rhythm shaped by water and nutrients, and this study shows just how dramatically that rhythm can flip the fortunes of the insects depending on them.
Scientists trapped over 16,000 moths in the swampy peat forests of central Congo, one dominated by palm trees and one by hardwoods, and compared them to a nearby drier forest. The swamps had noticeably fewer moth species, and unlike the drier forest, their moth numbers actually shrank during the rainy season rather than growing. The likely reason is that waterlogged, nutrient-poor soil changes how and when plants grow, which ripples out to affect the insects that eat them.
Key Findings
From 16,636 specimens, researchers identified 1,110 moth species/morphospecies across palm swamp, hardwood swamp, and terra firme forest.
Palm swamp forest supported only an estimated 637 moth species (46-52% of the terra firme total), while hardwood swamp supported 828 species (56-67%).
Moth abundance and richness in both swamp types decreased during the wet season, the opposite pattern seen in the nearby terra firme forest, likely due to different plant growth cycles in waterlogged soil.
