If you're growing alpine or rock-garden species from seed, this explains why identical sowing conditions can give wildly different germination rates depending on the weather the parent plant and the chilled seeds already lived through.
Scientists tested ten alpine plants and found their seeds carry a kind of temperature memory from three different points in life: when the mother plant was growing, during the cold winter chilling period, and right when the seed germinates. Surprisingly, warming during the earlier two stages, the mother plant's growing season and the cold stratification period, had a bigger effect on whether and how seeds sprout than warming during germination itself. Each species responded differently, showing that seeds are quietly tracking and integrating temperature cues across their whole life history, not just reacting to the moment.
