City sewage sludge has garden nutrients, but also toxic metals

If you use municipal compost or biosolid-based soil amendments, this study is a reminder that source matters: untreated sludge can carry heavy metals like mercury and cadmium right into your beds.
Researchers tested sewage sludge from several cities in Kerala, India, and found it's rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, basically the same nutrients you'd want in a good compost. But the sludge also contained heavy metals like mercury and cadmium, sometimes at levels nine times higher than safety limits, meaning it shouldn't go straight onto farmland or gardens without treatment first.
Key Findings
Sludge averaged 43.7% total organic carbon, 4.86% nitrogen, 1.88% phosphorus, and 0.345% potassium, with a C/N ratio of 9.1, indicating good compost potential.
Mercury exceeded regulatory limits (FCO 2009) in every sampled source, with a nine-fold excess in two locations (SC4 and SC5).
Copper exceeded limits in two sources, and cadmium and mercury were flagged as the top ecological risk concerns via contamination indices.
