The soil microbes around your tomatoes or houseplant roots are constantly texting chemical warnings that switch on the plant's own immune system, which means healthier soil could mean fewer pesticides in your garden.

Bacteria and fungi living in soil and on leaves give off scent-like chemical compounds, and some of these compounds act like an early warning system for plants. When a plant detects certain microbial smells, it ramps up its internal defenses against pests and diseases before an attack even happens. Scientists are now studying how to harness these natural signals to help crops protect themselves with less need for chemical treatments.
