Tiny nitric oxide capsules help lettuce shrug off salty soil

If you've ever watched container plants struggle after well water or road salt runoff leaves soil salty, this points to a spray-on trick that could help edible greens power through it.

Researchers built microscopic capsules out of chitosan, a biodegradable material derived from shellfish shells, and packed them with a compound that slowly releases nitric oxide, a gas that helps plants cope with stress. When they sprayed these capsules on lettuce growing in salty water, the plants grew significantly bigger and healthier than untreated lettuce, keeping their photosynthesis running normally even under heavy salt stress. The lettuce also built up more protective compounds, meaning the treated greens may have ended up more nutritious too.
