The dusty film on leaves near a busy road or farm field isn't just dirt, it's black carbon soot blocking sunlight and clogging the tiny pores plants use to breathe, a problem this review says we're only beginning to measure properly.

Black carbon is the sooty particulate matter that comes out of tailpipes, wildfires, and burning crop stubble, and it's different from biochar, the stuff gardeners intentionally mix into soil to help plants. This review found that when black carbon settles on leaves, it blocks light, plugs the pores plants use to breathe, and triggers stress reactions inside the plant that can drag down growth and harvests. Scientists still don't have solid, real-world data on how much soot it takes to actually hurt a crop, which the authors say is a major gap in understanding.
