Mixing perennials into crop rotations rebuilds soil structure fast

If you rotate cover crops or forage grasses through a vegetable bed or farm plot, this decade-long study shows that swapping in a perennial or legume phase does more for soil crumb structure than reaching for more fertilizer ever will.

Scientists tracked soil on Canadian farm plots for ten years, comparing fields planted with only annual crops versus fields that occasionally grew perennial grasses or legumes. The mixed rotations built much stronger soil clumps that resist erosion and hold water better, in one case improving soil stability by 87%, and this happened regardless of how much nitrogen fertilizer was applied. The takeaway: what you plant matters more than how much you feed the soil with fertilizer.
