Bacterial soap blend triples the speed of oil spill cleanup

Contaminated soil near old industrial sites, gas stations, or spill zones can sit toxic for years, and faster microbial cleanup methods like this one mean degraded land could return to garden or park use sooner.

When oil spills happen, tiny bacteria can eat the pollution, but thick crude oil resists mixing with water, so the microbes can't reach it easily. Researchers combined a bacteria-made soap called rhamnolipid with a common detergent to help break the oil into tiny droplets the microbes could access, and it worked far better than expected: the treated bacteria ate three times more oil in a week than untreated ones. The bacteria also changed their own surface chemistry and switched on genes for movement and metabolism to attack the oil more aggressively.
