The microplastics settling into garden soil and compost piles aren't just inert litter, they're actively hosting bacterial communities that swap antibiotic resistance genes back and forth.

When plastic breaks into tiny pieces, bacteria move in and form a slimy film called a plastisphere. Some of those bacteria are surprisingly good at breaking down pollution, but the same crowded conditions let them trade genes for resisting antibiotics, which is worrying because those genes can spread to other microbes nearby, including ones in soil and water we depend on.
