If you've got a rain garden or pond edge, knowing that umbrella plant, soft rush, canna, and iris each handle water pollution differently can help you pick the right species to filter runoff naturally.

Researchers grew four popular water-garden plants, umbrella plant, soft rush, canna lily, and iris, in water spiked with PFAS, the persistent 'forever chemicals' found in nonstick coatings and firefighting foam. Umbrella plant turned out to be the champion accumulator, soaking far more of the chemicals into its roots and shoots than the others, largely because it grows an especially long, dense root system. Each plant also fought off the chemical stress in its own way: one leaned on sugar and acid shifts, another on its antioxidant defenses, showing that picking the right plant matters a lot for cleaning up contaminated water.
