Wetland plants and reed beds are one of the cheapest tools for pulling drug residues out of contaminated water before it reaches farm fields and garden irrigation sources.
Rivers and streams across India are absorbing traces of antibiotics, painkillers, and other medicines that wash in from factories, hospitals, farms, and household wastewater. Regular water treatment plants can't fully filter these out, so the chemicals build up in sediment and in fish and other wildlife. Researchers reviewed several cleanup options, including using wetland plants to soak up and break down these pollutants naturally.
