Wetland plant grows stronger in oily soil, breaks down pollution

If you've ever wondered how nature bounces back after an oil spill in a marsh, this plant shows that some wetland species don't just survive contamination, they can thrive on it while quietly cleaning the soil.
Scientists planted a wetland sedge called Eleocharis mutata in soil dosed with crude oil, some fresh and some weathered (aged and partially broken down), and watched it for over a year. Surprisingly, moderate amounts of fresh oil made the plant grow taller and produce more flowers and biomass than usual, while the older weathered oil held it back. The plant also boosted helpful bacteria in its root zone that help break down the pollution, suggesting it could be a useful tool for cleaning up oil-contaminated tropical wetlands.

Fresh crude oil at 30, 60, and 90 g/kg caused a hormesis effect, with physiological index values above 1.0 indicating increased plant height, reproductive structures, and biomass.
Weathered crude oil at 126 g/kg suppressed growth and reproduction, with physiological index values below 1.0.
Phytoremediation with the plant boosted six rhizobacterial groups and the total bacteriological index by week 56, modestly increasing hydrocarbon removal at 60 g/kg, 90 g/kg CO, and 126 g/kg WCO compared to natural attenuation alone.
