Every bee that visits your garden flowers is also shuttling invisible microbial passengers that can shape how those flowers smell, look, and even how well your plants fight off disease.
Flowers are covered in tiny bacteria and fungi, living on nectar, petals, pollen, and the sticky stigma where pollen lands. Bees and other insects turn out to be the main taxis for these microbes, picking them up at one flower and dropping them off at the next, while birds do the same job in some regions and wind plays only a minor role. Scientists are just starting to realize these microscopic hitchhikers can change how attractive a flower smells or looks, and might even travel down into the rest of the plant.
