Plants build tiny protein sunscreens to survive scorching sunlight

When sunlight gets too intense, plants risk sunburn-like damage inside the tiny factories where they turn light into energy. Researchers found a protein called MBS1 that senses this danger and clumps into droplet-like blobs that physically shade and protect those factories, like a sunscreen forming right when it's needed. Rice plants engineered to make more of this protein handled bright light better and grew more grain over four years of real field testing.
