Friendly microbes and minerals help beans fight off three diseases

If you've ever grown green beans in a backyard plot and watched leaves develop rust-colored spots or water-soaked lesions, this research points to seed and leaf treatments using naturally occurring bacteria and fungi that could keep your plants healthier without synthetic fungicides.
Common beans get attacked by three nasty diseases: bacterial blight, anthracnose, and angular leaf spot, all of which can wreck a harvest. Researchers in Brazil tested coating bean seeds (and sometimes spraying young plants too) with helpful microbes like Bacillus and Trichoderma, plus citric acid and sulfur, to see if these natural treatments could fend off the diseases. All the treatments reduced disease severity, and the microbial treatments in particular led to better yields and fewer shriveled, unusable seeds.
