Rust disease alerts help Ethiopian wheat farmers spray at better times

If you've ever watched orange-brown streaks creep up a plant leaf and wondered whether to spray now or wait, this study shows that timely disease forecasts genuinely change when farmers act, and when they still get it wrong.
Wheat rust is a fungal disease that can wreck harvests, and Ethiopia built an early warning system that tells farmers when and where rust risk is climbing. Researchers tracked over 500 farmers and found that people did spray fungicide sooner when forecasts predicted higher rust pressure, especially if they'd also gotten advice from extension workers. But timing still wasn't perfect: roughly one in four sprays happened outside the wheat growth stages when treatment actually works best.
