Europeans fear pesticide residue more than gene-edited watermelon

The watermelon at your next cookout could come from a gene-edited seed grown with far fewer sprays, and this study suggests most shoppers would actually prefer that trade-off over a conventionally sprayed one.

Researchers asked over 1,200 people in Spain, Germany, and the UK to choose between watermelons grown different ways: with regular pesticides, organic-approved pesticides, zero-residue pesticides, or gene-edited seeds. About a quarter of shoppers said no to gene editing no matter what, but overall people were more worried about pesticide residue than about the gene editing itself. That's a notable finding because European law currently treats gene-edited crops much more cautiously than pesticide use, even though shoppers seem to feel the opposite way.
