Recovering mined forests can out-produce old growth in food for wildlife

If you've ever wondered whether a replanted woodlot or reclaimed lot can really support birds and bees like an old forest, this study says yes, sometimes even better, because regrowing plants often flower and fruit more heavily than mature trees nearby.

Researchers spent a year watching when trees and shrubs flowered and fruited in a patch of Amazon forest that's regrowing after bauxite mining, comparing it to nearby untouched forest. They found the recovering area actually had more plants flowering and fruiting, and more intensely, than the old forest, meaning young regenerating land can be a surprisingly rich food source for pollinators and fruit-eating animals. Both forest types bloomed and fruited on similar seasonal schedules, suggesting climate sets the timing while the plants' own growth strategies drive how much food they produce.
