Rain garden soil traps forever chemicals but stresses the plants

If you've got a rain garden or live near one of the bioretention basins cities build to soak up stormwater, the plants rooted there may be silently absorbing PFAS chemicals that mess with their photosynthesis and growth.

Cities build special soil basins called rain gardens or bioretention systems to catch stormwater runoff before it reaches groundwater. Researchers found these systems can trap harmful 'forever chemicals' called PFAS, especially when the soil is mixed with water treatment leftovers, but the plants growing in that soil still show signs of stress like disrupted photosynthesis and altered antioxidant activity. The takeaway: better filtering media helps, but it doesn't fully protect the plants from harm.
