If you grow greens in beds that have been fertilized for years, this is a food-waste trick that could tighten up loose phosphorus in your soil while your plants keep thriving.
Greenhouse vegetable soils often build up so much phosphorus from years of fertilizing that it becomes loosely held and prone to washing away or leaching into waterways. Researchers found that mixing in eggshells, especially unwashed ones, raised soil pH and shifted that phosphorus into more tightly bound, stable forms while still leaving plenty available for plants to use. In field trials, eggshell-treated soil produced pak choi with 27.9% more phosphorus uptake and 11.2% higher fresh yield, showing that locking up excess nutrients doesn't have to mean starving your crops.
