Freeze-thaw cracks break down biochar's grip on soil metals

If you're improving soil with biochar in a spot that freezes hard in winter, this research suggests that repeated freeze-thaw cycles can physically crack the material and release trapped heavy metals back into your beds, while simple wet-dry swings actually help it lock contaminants down tighter.

Biochar is charcoal-like material gardeners and land managers add to soil to trap toxic heavy metals from old industrial sites. Scientists found that when soil freezes and thaws repeatedly, it physically breaks the biochar apart and lets metals leak out at over three times the normal rate. But when soil just dries out and gets wet again, it actually helps the biochar bind those metals more permanently by forming stable mineral compounds.

Dry-wet cycling had the opposite effect, driving metals into Fe/Mn oxide-bound and phosphate/carbonate precipitate forms, improving long-term stabilization.
