Grass and straw turn toxic mine waste into living soil

If you've ever driven past a scarred, rusty-looking mine site and wondered if it could ever be green again, this research shows that something as simple as ryegrass and crop straw can start rebuilding real soil there within a single growing season.
Iron mine waste, called tailings, is basically crushed rock with no life in it, nothing like real soil. Researchers planted ryegrass in this waste, sometimes mixing in corn straw and a bit of real soil, and watched what happened. The grass roots changed the iron minerals into more stable forms, helped organic matter build up, and shifted the microbial community toward types that fix nitrogen, all early steps toward turning dead rock into functioning soil.
