Insect waste compost cuts toxic metal uptake in medicinal herb

If you grow herbs or vegetables in soil with a questionable history, this points to a low-cost amendment, insect frass, that can boost plant health while reducing how much heavy metal ends up in the parts you'd harvest.

Researchers grew a popular medicinal herb called Baikal skullcap in soil contaminated with chromium and arsenic, then tested whether adding the waste from beetle larvae (called frass) could help. The right amount of frass improved root growth, boosted leaf health, and cut down how much of the toxic metals the plant absorbed, though piling on too much frass caused salt buildup and other tradeoffs. It's a promising, low-tech way to make polluted soil safer for growing plants people intend to use.
