Seafood shell waste locks toxic metals out of garden soil

If you garden near an old industrial site, road, or orchard where lead and zinc tend to linger in soil, this shows a cheap waste product, crushed and heated shellfish shells, can bind those metals so they don't end up in your vegetables.

Researchers took leftover shells from abalone and pen shells, heated some of them, and mixed them into soil contaminated with lead and zinc. The calcium-rich shells reacted with the metals to form stable, low-solubility minerals that stayed put instead of leaching out or moving into plants. When they added a clean soil cap on top and grew lettuce, the plants came up with no detectable lead and safe zinc levels, plus they grew up to 94% bigger than lettuce in untreated soil.

Calcined (heat-treated) shells reduced leachable lead and zinc by more than 97% at just 2% application by weight.

The easily mobile lead fraction in soil dropped from 16.0% to about 4.6% after treatment, shifting into more stable chemical forms.
