Cadmium-cleanup mineral stresses one earthworm species, spares another

The earthworms tunneling through your garden beds and compost pile are exactly the kind of soil life that a pollution fix can quietly disturb, even when the treatment does its main job well.

Scientists tested a nano-sized mineral powder added to cadmium-polluted soil to see if it could trap the toxic metal and keep it away from living things. The powder worked at locking up cadmium, but it stressed a surface-dwelling earthworm species for a few weeks while a deeper-burrowing species barely noticed. Soil microbes also took a temporary hit at the highest dose before recovering, showing that timing and dose matter as much as the cleanup method itself.

3% nano-hydroxyapatite raised soil pH by 0.50-0.55 units and cut available cadmium by 21.3-27.6%, effectively immobilizing the metal.

Eisenia fetida (a surface-dwelling earthworm) suffered reduced survival and biomass at day 14 under 3% treatment, while Amynthas robustus (a burrowing species) showed no such harm.

High-dose treatment briefly suppressed total soil microbial biomass early on, but overall community structure recovered and stayed largely stable over the 42-day study.
